Or the art of greeting people by kissing both cheeks.
It is customary in France to say hello by kissing people you know and with who you are on friendly terms (i.e. Friends of friends…).
The rule is that girls kiss girls, boys kiss girls, boys shake hands with boys unless they are very good friends.
Age is also a factor.
And colleagues at work do it too and it annoys me greatly. For one thing when I came back to France I had lost the habit of kissing people and I would always extend my hand when I was introduced to potential new friends. I now see this "kissing at the office" thing as a waste of time. And because of this, I am sure I appear as someone cold. Yes there are people I like and would like to see outside of work, but if there is a group and you start by kissing someone you have to do it with everybody.
I just don’t see the point.

I'm so with you on this one...
Luckily, I had almost exclusively anglo co-workers since I've back in France.
"I just don’t see the point."
It's a thing called "tradition", or something like that ;o)
