Plage = Beach
Tomorrow (I think) Paris Plage will open. Every summer a portion of the road running along the Seine River is closed to the traffic and open to pedestrian and some of it is covered in sand. On the sand, you'll find lounging chairs, umbrellas.... I guess drink stands... over the weekends there are free concerts.

So that is what that is!! Last summer we saw the sand and thought it a little odd but just wrote it up to being a "French thing;-)"
